House renovation: renew your home while preserving what is good
Is your home in need of renovation, either technically or aesthetically, but you don't need to start everything from scratch? With a home renovation, you can target outdated elements and make the house fit your lifestyle today and for the years to come.
Van Der Hart Timmerwerk handles renovations where structural work, carpentry, and finishing are coordinated. We examine what can be preserved, where repairs are needed, and which parts are better replaced. This allows us to work in a targeted manner on a house that feels right again, without unnecessarily tearing down what is still in great condition.
- Renovation tailored to your home
- Construction and carpentry within a single project
- Preserve what is good, renew where necessary
- Single point of contact during the renovation
Give your existing home years ahead
A house that has lasted for years often has qualities that you specifically want to retain. At the same time, spaces can become dated, woodwork can wear out, or structural components may no longer align with the way you live today. A renovation gives you the opportunity to make targeted updates without losing the character of the home.
This can involve a single floor, multiple rooms, or various components throughout the entire house. Think of rebuilding walls and ceilings, renewing millwork, restoring existing woodwork, or modifying parts that have technically passed their prime.
If you want to renovate your home, we therefore first look at what is already there. We map out the existing situation, discuss what you want to keep, and determine which work is necessary to make the house neat, practical, and future-proof again.
What can you have renovated in your home?
Every home and renovation project is different. That’s why we first take a look at the current condition of the home, which areas you want to tackle, and what’s needed to make the home neat and functional again.
Renovate the ground floor
A ground floor can still function technically well, but in terms of layout, finishes, or woodwork, it may no longer match how you want to live. We can restore, renew, or rebuild existing parts and ensure that new finishes blend seamlessly with what is preserved.
Renovate upper floor or attic
Bedrooms and attic spaces are often modified multiple times over the years. Old paneling, damaged ceilings, or impractical layouts can mean the upper floor is no longer being used to its full potential. With a targeted renovation, we make the space neat and usable again.
Repair or renew woodwork
Old woodwork does not automatically need to be completely replaced. We first assess the condition of frames, trim, doors, and other wooden components. Where repair is possible and sensible, we can retain existing parts. Where necessary, we custom-make new parts.
Renovate older home
Especially in older homes, you do not always know in advance exactly what is behind a wall, ceiling, or old paneling. We therefore look beyond just the visible work and assess how new components can properly connect to existing structures and materials.
Retain character and renew with focus
A renovation does not have to completely change a home's character. Beautiful existing details can remain part of the final result. We combine what may be preserved with new construction and carpentry work that matches the style of the house.
Renovation starts with what is already there
With new construction, you work from a blank slate. With renovation, on the other hand, new work must fit a home that sometimes has existed for decades. Walls are not always completely straight, dimensions deviate, and previous remodeling may have altered the original situation. Exactly there, custom work becomes important.
Therefore, we are looking at which parts are reliable enough to keep and where restoration, modification, or replacement is the better choice. We then create new constructions and finishes that fit the existing situation, rather than forcibly adapting the home to a standard solution.
For wooden parts, we can our own custom woodwork installation. That is especially valuable in renovations, because existing dimensions and connections regularly deviate from standard solutions.
Renovate house or completely remodel?
The terms renovation and remodeling are regularly used interchangeably. Yet, in a renovation, the emphasis is primarily on repairing, renewing, and improving what is already present in the home.
During a complete renovation, more typically changes regarding the way the house is structured or used. Think of removing and moving walls, redesigning multiple floors, or carrying out several major structural works at the same time.
Do you want to not only update existing elements, but also radically change your home's layout? Then also check out our options for a complete renovation of your house.
By the way, you do not need to know in advance exactly which category your plans fall under. During a site visit, we mainly look at what you want to change and which approach best suits that structurally.
What customers say about us
During a renovation, we work with a home that is already standing. This requires careful handling of existing components, thoughtful problem-solving when the situation turns out differently than expected, and clear communication throughout the work. That is why we love letting our customers share their own experiences working with Van Der Hart Timmerwerk.

From the existing situation to a renewed whole
A good renovation usually starts with going back to a reliable foundation. Old finishes are removed where necessary, existing components are inspected, and damaged or outdated parts are repaired first before building up the new work.
That exact order is important. A neat new finish has little value if the underlying construction has not been properly addressed. Van Der Hart Timmerwerk therefore handles both the structural work and the carpentry, keeping an overview of the various components of the renovation.
- Demolition and preparatory work
- Structural repair of existing components
- Repairing or rebuilding walls and ceilings
- Constructive adjustments where necessary
- Renovating and restoring window frames and woodwork
- Insulating parts that are being addressed during the renovation
- Carpentry and custom work
- Finishing of walls, ceilings and connections
- Coordination of various activities within the project
- Finishing of the renovated rooms
Do you want to create more living space at the same time during the renovation? Then we can, for example, look into whether the work can be combined with a home extension.

How much does it cost to renovate a house?
The costs of a home renovation depend heavily on what you have addressed and on the condition of the existing house. Renovating one floor, for example, cannot be compared to a house renovation where multiple rooms, structures, and finishes are renewed at the same time.
An important difference from new construction is that the entire existing situation is not always visible before work begins. Behind old paneling or a ceiling, it may turn out that repairs are needed first. Therefore, during preparation, we try to map out as much as possible in advance so that it is clear what work we expect.
We prefer to work from your home and specific wishes rather than a general price per square meter. During a site visit, we will look at what will be kept, what needs to be renovated, and what work is required for that. Based on that foundation, we can draw up a suitable quote.
What determines the cost of a home renovation?
The final investment is determined, among other things, by:
- The scope of the renovation
- The number of spaces being addressed
- The condition and age of existing components
- The amount of demolition and repair work
- Any constructive adjustments
- The amount of carpentry and custom work
- The desired finish level
- The selected materials
- Any additional repairs that prove necessary during the work

This is how we approach the renovation of your home
During a renovation, we first want to know what lies behind the current finish and construction before we determine how to proceed with the building work. That is why we discuss your wishes, inspect the home on site, and determine which parts will be preserved, restored, or renewed. From there, we create a logical sequence for the work so that the existing and new elements will seamlessly connect later on.
Step 1 – Application and introduction
You let us know what you have in mind, big or small. We will contact you to discuss your wishes, ideas, and expectations.
Step 2 – Site Visit
We will visit you to inspect the home and the available space. This gives us a clear picture of the current situation and allows us to provide targeted advice on the possibilities.
Step 3 – Proposal and non-binding quote
Based on your wishes and the situation, we will create a clear proposal. You will receive a non-binding quotation in which the discussed work is clearly described.
Step 4 – Design and preparation
Following approval, we will elaborate the plans further. We will coordinate the construction, materials, schedule, and necessary preparations with you, ensuring everything is clear before we start.
Step 5 – Construction and finishing
Our team realizes the expansion and ensures that the various activities are well-coordinated. During execution, we will keep you informed of the progress.
Step 6 – Delivery
Upon completion, we will review the work together. We will check the execution, discuss any points of attention, and ensure a neat delivery of the new space.

Frequently asked questions about renovating a home
Where do you start when renovating a house?
Start with the existing home and not immediately with new materials or the final finish. First, map out which parts need technical attention, what you want to keep, and which rooms you want to change. Afterward, a logical work sequence can be determined: first demolition, repair, and any structural work, and then construction and finishing.
In what order is it best to renovate a house?
Broadly speaking, you work from structural and construction elements to the visible finish. First, components that are not to be kept are removed and necessary repairs are carried out. This is followed by any structural adjustments, construction work, and installation work, and only then the final trimming and finishing. The exact order varies per home.
How long does a home renovation take?
That largely depends on the size and condition of the home. Renovating a single room can be done much faster than tackling multiple floors at the same time. Repair work that only becomes visible after opening up existing structures can also affect the schedule. After inspecting your home, we can provide a much more realistic picture of that.
Can you continue to live in the house during a renovation?
With a smaller or phased renovation, that is regularly possible. If multiple important rooms are being tackled at the same time or a lot of demolition and construction work is taking place, temporarily staying somewhere else may be more pleasant. Before the start, we discuss which rooms will remain usable during the work.
Is it smart to combine renovation and sustainability upgrades?
A wooden dormer window requires periodic maintenance to properly protect the wood and paintwork against weather influences. How often maintenance is needed depends, among other things, on the location, the finish used, and exposure to sun and rain. Regular inspection and timely touch-ups prevent small damages from developing into bigger problems. Periodic inspection and paint maintenance are also specifically mentioned for wooden dormer windows.
Do you need a permit for a home renovation?
