Custom canopy for more outdoor living in your garden
Do you want to sit outside more often without depending on every rain shower or the bright sun? With a patio cover, you create a sheltered spot where you can eat, lounge, or spend time together outside. Directly attached to the house or in a quiet spot further down the garden.
Van Der Hart Timmerwerk builds fully custom wooden canopies. We take into account the available space, the desired look, and how you plan to use the canopy. From construction and carpentry to installation and finishing, you’ll have a single point of contact throughout the process.

A permanent spot to sit outside longer
A patio is wonderful when the weather cooperates. With a canopy, the same space becomes much less dependent on the weather. You’re sheltered from above and can use the outdoor space earlier in the spring and later into the fall.
How that place looks is largely up to you. Perhaps you want to fit a large dining table, create a lounge area, or rather a compact canopy where you can sit quietly. We therefore tailor the dimensions and position to what you actually want to do with it.
The relationship with the house and garden is also important. A canopy must offer sufficient space without making the rest of the garden feel unnecessarily heavy or small. Therefore, we first look at the complete situation before determining the dimensions.
Which patio roof fits your garden?
A canopy can be built directly attached to the house or given its own spot in the garden. We look at where you want to sit, how much space you need, and which design fits best.
Patio cover attached to the house
A covered area right next to the house makes it easy to walk from the kitchen or living room to a sheltered outdoor space. We pay close attention to how it connects with the facade, the height of the structure, and how it relates to existing windows and doors.
Freestanding canopy
Do you want to create a separate seating area specifically at the back or elsewhere in the garden? Then a freestanding canopy can be a good solution. The structure is completely independent and can therefore be placed precisely where you can make the best use of your outdoor space.
Canopy with extra shelter
A completely open canopy creates a real sense of being outdoors, but depending on the location, a wooden side panel can be nice for providing more shelter or privacy. We’ll determine which sides can remain open and where additional shelter would actually be a benefit.
A canopy tailored to your garden
A custom canopy doesn't start with a fixed standard width. We first assess how much space is available, where the structure will be located, and what you want to be able to do under the canopy.
This leads to choices regarding width, depth, and height, as well as the position of uprights, the roof, and any side walls. Particularly in the case of a patio roof attached to the house, these components must align well with the existing facade, doors, window frames, and roof edge.
By working out the construction around your situation, we can make practical use of the space and prevent dimensions or connections from having to be adjusted afterward.
Wooden canopy with a look that matches your garden
Wood is well-suited for outdoor structures because it is both sturdy and versatile to work with. With a variety of beam sizes, profiles, and finishes, a wooden canopy can be designed to be robust, or, conversely, sleek and understated.
The choice of wood depends on the desired appearance, application, and amount of maintenance. The detailing is also important. Think of the ratio between uprights and beams, visible joints, roof trim, and any wooden side walls.
Because we have a lot of the custom woodwork carry out ourselves, we can include these details directly in the design and construction of the canopy.
Canopy or veranda: what fits your plans better?
The terms patio cover and veranda are regularly used interchangeably. By a patio cover, we mean a broad category of covered outdoor structures. It can be attached to the house, but it can also be built completely freestanding in the garden.
A veranda usually connects directly to the home and therefore feels more strongly like an extension of the house. The location and the way you want to use the outdoor space therefore primarily determine which design makes sense.

From a wooden structure to a finished canopy
Building a canopy starts with a solid foundation. The structure must be set up securely, the posts and beams must fit together properly, and the roof must have sufficient slope and proper drainage. After that, it’s the details that make all the difference in the final result.
Van Der Hart Timmerwerk handles the construction and carpentry of the canopy within a single project. Depending on your design, the implementation may include the following work, among other things:
- Measuring and layout of the canopy
- Preparing the substrate and support points
- Installing posts and support structure
- Manufacturing and assembly of wooden beams
- Building the roof structure
- Installation of roofing and drainage
- Installation of any wooden side panels
- Connect to the existing house where necessary
- Custom carpentry and detailing
- Neat finish on the entire structure
This way we keep the construction and finishing within the same project. From the initial measurements to the final connection, you know who is doing the work and you have a single point of contact for your canopy.

How much does it cost to have a canopy installed?
The costs of a canopy depend, among other things, on the dimensions, construction, and material choices. A compact open canopy requires a different execution than a large wooden canopy with multiple side walls and a lot of customization.
The location in the garden is also a factor. A freestanding structure requires different connections than a canopy built against the existing house. In addition, the roof structure, detailing, and finish determine how much work is required.
That is why we first look at what you want to have built and where the canopy should be placed. Based on the situation, materials, and execution, we can then provide a suitable quote.
What does the price of a canopy depend on?
- The width and depth of the canopy
- The height and weight of the construction
- The chosen wood type
- The required support points or foundation
- The execution of the roof
- Extension to the house or freestanding installation
- The number of open and closed sides
- The amount of custom work
- Roof finishing and drainage

This is how we build your custom canopy
We start with the location where you want the canopy and how you plan to use it. After that, we measure the site and determine the dimensions, construction, and material choices. This allows us to properly prepare the woodwork and build and finish the canopy on location step by step.
Step 1 – Application and introduction
You let us know what you have in mind, big or small. We will contact you to discuss your wishes, ideas, and expectations.
Step 2 – Site Visit
We will visit you to inspect the home and the available space. This gives us a clear picture of the current situation and allows us to provide targeted advice on the possibilities.
Step 3 – Proposal and non-binding quote
Based on your wishes and the situation, we will create a clear proposal. You will receive a non-binding quotation in which the discussed work is clearly described.
Step 4 – Design and preparation
Following approval, we will elaborate the plans further. We will coordinate the construction, materials, schedule, and necessary preparations with you, ensuring everything is clear before we start.
Step 5 – Construction and finishing
Our team realizes the expansion and ensures that the various activities are well-coordinated. During execution, we will keep you informed of the progress.
Step 6 – Delivery
Upon completion, we will review the work together. We will check the execution, discuss any points of attention, and ensure a neat delivery of the new space.
Why have a patio cover built by Van Der Hart?
A wooden patio cover consists of relatively large structural components, but it is precisely the dimensions and connections that determine whether the final result looks sleek. That is why we combine the construction of the framework with the carpentry and finishing.
Van Der Hart Carpentry does not work from a single standard model. We look at the location, desired dimensions, and appearance, and we make the construction fit your garden. Even when the situation calls for non-standard sizes or specific wooden details.
We build patio roofs and other construction and wood projects across a large service area around Amsterdam, Haarlem, and Utrecht. From preparation to delivery, you will have a single dedicated point of contact.
This is why customers choose Van Der Hart Carpentry:
- Custom wooden canopy
- Craftsmanship in wood and construction work
- Attention to dimensions and connections
- Not a standard model, but tailored to your garden
- Clear agreements and direct communication channels
- Single point of contact from preparation to delivery
Frequently asked questions about a patio roof
Do you need a permit for a patio cover?
Not always. Whether you can build a patio cover without a permit depends on the location on the plot, dimensions, height, existing buildings, and the rules of your municipality. Both technical and spatial rules may apply to accessory structures. Therefore, always check your specific plan via the Permit check of the Environment and Planning Portal.
What is the maximum allowed height for a canopy?
That cannot be answered with a single maximum height for every situation. The permitted height depends, among other things, on where the canopy is located on the plot, the distance to the home, and local regulations. IPLO applies various conditions for permit-exempt accessory buildings and therefore advises checking the specific situation via the Environment and Planning Portal (Omgevingsloket).
Can a patio cover be placed on the property boundary?
Building on the property boundary does not automatically trigger a permit requirement on its own. However, the municipality may have included rules in the environmental plan regarding building on or at a distance from the property boundary. Therefore, check in advance which rules apply to your plot and also practically take into account maintenance and drainage towards your own land.
Does a wooden patio cover need a foundation?
A canopy requires a stable base that can support the weight of the structure and prevents posts from sagging or moving. Which solution is needed depends on the dimensions, construction, and subsoil. Therefore, we evaluate per situation how the load-bearing points of the canopy can best be executed.
How do you maintain a wooden patio cover?
How much maintenance is needed depends on the chosen wood species and finish. Outdoor wood is constantly exposed to sun and moisture. If you want to maintain the original color or a specific finish, periodic treatment may be necessary. In addition, it is wise to regularly inspect and clean the roof, drainage, joints, and woodwork.
