Building a veranda for a sheltered outdoor space at home

Would you like to walk directly from your house to a nice, covered outdoor space? With a veranda attached to your home, you create a sheltered patio where you can eat, sit, and enjoy the garden more often, even when the weather isn't cooperating.

Van Der Hart Timmerwerk builds completely custom wooden verandas. We look at the facade, the available space, and how you want to use the veranda. Then we take care of the construction, carpentry, and finishing, with a single dedicated contact person throughout the entire project.

Turn your patio into an extension of your home

You probably already use a patio directly behind the house a lot as soon as the weather is nice. With a veranda, that spot becomes less dependent on the sun or an unexpected rain shower, allowing you to sit there comfortably for a larger part of the year.

Because the veranda connects directly to the home, a natural transition between inside and outside is created. From the kitchen or living room, you step right out to a sheltered spot for a dining table, lounge set, or a combination of both.

The correct dimensions are important in this regard. The veranda must offer enough space for how you want to use it, without taking up an unnecessarily large part of the garden. That is why we view the house and outdoor space as a single entity before determining the dimensions.

How do you want to use your veranda?

A veranda can be built in various ways. We mainly look at how much shelter you want, what needs to fit under the veranda, and how the structure should connect to your home.

Open veranda attached to the house

Do you primarily want to be able to sit outside dry and sheltered? Then an open wooden veranda may suffice. The roof provides shelter, while the open sides ensure that the connection with the garden is maintained.

Veranda with wooden side wall

Is your terrace exposed to the wind or do you want more privacy? Then one or more sides can be finished partially or completely with wood. We determine the position and height so that the wall provides shelter without making the veranda unnecessarily enclosed.

Porch with wooden patio or deck

Would you like to make the subsurface part of the whole as well? A wooden floor or decking can match the construction of the veranda nicely and creates a single, continuous outdoor space. We will coordinate the height and dimensions with the house, doors, and garden.

A custom veranda for your home and patio

A veranda is built directly against the house. As a result, the dimensions and connections must fit well with the existing facade. Think of the height of window frames and doors, the roof edge, downspouts, and the available depth of the patio.

Therefore, we do not first determine a standard size to then place against the house. We measure the situation on-site and look at which width, depth, and height are both practical and in proportion to the home.

We also take into account the position of the uprights, the roof structure, and any side walls. This allows us to build a veranda that not only offers sufficient space, but also connects neatly to the house.

Wooden veranda attached to the house or rather a canopy?

A wooden veranda is usually built directly against the house. As a result, the structure feels like an extension of the patio and the indoor living space. Wood fits this well because we can completely adapt the dimensions, construction, and detailing to the facade and garden.

The term canopy is broader. A canopy can also be attached to the house, but can also stand completely freestanding somewhere else in the garden. Do you want to create a separate sheltered spot further away from the house? Then view our options for a custom canopy.

When it comes to a wooden veranda, we look at beam sizes, wood type, roof construction, roof edge, and visible connections, among other things. This way, we determine together which design matches the look of your home.

From facade to completely finished veranda

Building a veranda starts with a stable foundation and a good connection to the house. Posts and beams must support the structure, the roof must have proper drainage, and all connections to the existing facade must be finished neatly.

Van Der Hart Carpentry takes care of both construction and carpentry within a single project. Depending on the chosen execution, the following work, among other things, can be part of your veranda:

This way, construction and finishing are carried out as a single entity from the start. You have a single point of contact for the measuring, building, and neat delivery of your veranda.

How much does it cost to build a veranda?

The cost of a veranda depends heavily on the dimensions and execution. A compact open veranda requires less material and labor than a wide wooden veranda with side walls, a heavier construction, and extensive custom details.

The existing situation also has an impact. The subsoil must be suitable for the construction, and the connection to the façade differs per home. In addition, choices regarding wood, roof structure, and finishing determine how much work is required.

That is why we first look at where you want to place the veranda and how you want to use it. Next, we map out the construction, materials, and work, and we can provide a suitable quote.

This is how we build your veranda step by step

We start with how you want to use the veranda and then look at the location at the house. During the site visit, we measure the facade and outdoor space, paying attention to existing window frames, doors, roof edges, and other connections. Based on that situation, we determine the dimensions and execution so that we can properly prepare the woodwork before construction begins.

Step 1 – Application and introduction

You let us know what you have in mind, big or small. We will contact you to discuss your wishes, ideas, and expectations.

We will visit you to inspect the home and the available space. This gives us a clear picture of the current situation and allows us to provide targeted advice on the possibilities.

Based on your wishes and the situation, we will create a clear proposal. You will receive a non-binding quotation in which the discussed work is clearly described.

Following approval, we will elaborate the plans further. We will coordinate the construction, materials, schedule, and necessary preparations with you, ensuring everything is clear before we start.

Our team realizes the expansion and ensures that the various activities are well-coordinated. During execution, we will keep you informed of the progress.

Upon completion, we will review the work together. We will check the execution, discuss any points of attention, and ensure a neat delivery of the new space.

Why have your patio cover built by Van Der Hart?

A veranda does not stand isolated somewhere in the garden, but becomes part of the home and the patio. Precisely for this reason, the wooden structure, connection to the facade, and visible finish must align well with one another.

Van Der Hart Carpentry combines experience in timber construction with custom woodwork. This allows us to take non-standard dimensions, existing construction parts, and details that need to be made specifically for your home into account right from the measuring phase.

We build verandas and other timber projects in a large service area around Amsterdam, Haarlem, and Utrecht. From preparation to completion, you have a single dedicated point of contact.

Frequently asked questions about building a veranda

There is no single ideal depth. That mainly depends on what you want to place under the veranda and how much garden you want to keep. For example, a dining table requires different clearance than a compact seating area. In current veranda information, sizes of about 2.5 to 4 meters are very common, but with custom work, we determine the right proportion based on your home and garden.

A veranda requires a stable base to support the weight of the structure and prevent subsidence. Which foundation or load-bearing solution is suitable depends on the structure and the subsoil. Especially with heavier wooden structures, it is important to assess this properly in advance.

That is possible. Because the veranda is placed directly in front of the rear facade, the roof blocks some of the natural light that would otherwise enter through windows or doors. How strong that effect is depends, among other things, on the depth, height, and roof design. That is why we take the light into account when determining the dimensions and design. The loss of natural light is also a recurring point of attention with attached verandas.

Check the woodwork regularly for dirt, moisture, and damage, and keep the roof and drainage free of leaves and other debris. How often the wood itself needs to be treated depends on the wood species and the chosen finish. If you want to maintain a specific color, this generally requires more maintenance than if the wood is allowed to weather naturally.

Not always. A veranda may fall under the rules for an accessory building. Whether a permit, notification, or other obligation applies depends, among other things, on the location on the plot, dimensions, and local rules. Therefore, check your plan in advance with the Permit check of the Environment and Planning Portal. IPLO advises private individuals to do this explicitly for associated structures as well.
